Toward the Sharing and Advancement of the Takushin Philosophy of Budo

Budo is not merely a system of techniques for displaying physical power.
It is a human endeavor that seeks to cultivate self-mastery, confront others with integrity, and embody order through encounters at the limits of human experience.
The essence of Budo lies far beyond the acquisition of fighting techniques. Individual skills such as attack, defense, footwork, and distancing are indispensable elements of martial practice. Yet true mastery lies in integrating these techniques and applying them appropriately according to changing circumstances. Skill is the comprehensive ability to make one’s own techniques effective while simultaneously neutralizing those of an opponent.
Beyond skill lies Shinryoku—the inner sovereignty that governs skill. It is the strength to overcome fear, maintain composure, and choose one’s actions with unwavering resolve.
When skill and Shinryoku become one, Budo transcends mere martial technique or combat sport and becomes a Way. In this realm, others are no longer opponents to be conquered but mirrors reflecting ourselves and partners in the creation of order. To embody the universal principles (Riho) that underlie attack and defense, victory and defeat—this is the true purpose of martial training.
In the modern world, however, this essence is often overlooked. When excessive value is placed on displays of power or superficial victory and defeat, Budo risks becoming nothing more than refined violence. For this reason, it is essential to reaffirm Budo as the Way of skill and Shinryoku and to share its philosophical foundation with clarity.
Budo is both a path of character formation and a path of human development. It establishes a vertical axis directed toward one’s deepest origin and highest ideals while cultivating a horizontal axis that equally respects oneself and others. When these two seemingly similar yet fundamentally different axes intersect, a person begins to move beyond the simple categories of strength and weakness toward human fulfillment and genuine maturity.
This philosophy should never be confined to a single style or organization. It is a universal principle that can be shared by all who practice Budo, regardless of nationality or culture. Whether as competitors, instructors, or practitioners, when individuals embrace this philosophy and embody it in daily practice, Budo becomes a meaningful contribution to modern society.
Now is the time to promote a vision of Budo that elevates it from a path of power to a path of discipline, and from techniques for winning to a lifelong cultivation of character. By refining skill, cultivating Shinryoku, and reconnecting with others beyond the self, we open the way to the future of Budo.
The sharing and advancement of this philosophy is the first step toward passing Budo on to future generations and making a quiet yet lasting contribution to the future of humanity.
